It was fine, he told himself. He saved a lot more people than what would have survived if he insisted they fight. The road was unsalvageable anyways. And this way, most of their group made it back. Most. … He really hoped that Aranea wasn’t in town. She… She might cry if he died and she had only been minutes away in her ship. And he didn’t want that.
Notes: NEVER EXPECTED TO DO A FOLLOW UP. Yet, someone left me a nice comment over on AO3, and I got hit over the head with some inspiration for a continuation.
Summary: You’ve lived years with the Goddess of the sea, but it couldn’t last. Not yet anyways. There’s something you need to do first. 2080 words.
It had been ages since you had walked into the sea’s
embrace. Thousands of years. You’d watched your village rise and then fall, and with them went the
hibiscus offering that were once yearly. Familiar landmarks had become
weathered away and foreign. Even your name had vanished into the years. But you
knew peace at Leviathan’s side. You didn’t know how your life had become so
prolonged and didn’t care enough to ask. All you knew was that you were
content.
What if Ardyn and Somnus were twins? Like, fraternal twins. Ardyn was older by only a few minutes, but didn’t want the throne. Just like my last AU, they have magic without the crystal, but this time around Ardyn kind of gives into the temptation of running off for a year when they turn 20 and exploring the world before he has to come back and step in as his father’s heir. Somnus encourages this, and in the dead of night he takes off.
Problem is that the gods, like in the last AU, were planning on gifting them the crystal and putting the same plan in action. Ardyn is the only one who can heal people, because that’s what he wanted to study with his magic. Somnus learned how to wield the elements instead. And as Ardyn runs around and see sick people, healing them without the tie to the crystal enabling the scourge to seep into his soul, it just starts floating around and binding to the gods instead of him.
So they’re a little cross with Ardyn for ruining their plans already. (Except Ifrit, who is not at all on board with sacrificing his favorite humans.)((The god of light was his favorite fellow god, until he decided to become mortal, after all.)) So they issue Somnus an ultimatum, to save their own hides; Find your brother so he can begin his work for the gods and heal the scourge away.
He’s like, bummer, Ardyn just wanted a year of freedom, but okay. So he starts trailing after his brother with Gilgamesh, (slowly mind you) and starts learning that, hey, Ardyn can already heal the scourge, and two, he knows that I’m looking for him the little shit. Because Ardyn doesn’t know about the god’s proclamation, and is just like, whoops, dad must be super cross with me for taking off if he’s sending my brother and Gil after me, and leaves little clues around spots he’s been indicating where he’s going next. Very obvious clues. Like, literally, he draws on a map at one point that says ‘X marks the spot’ with a huge X on it and a silly looking drawing of Gil and Somnus following a trail to the X.
Occasionally, they spend nights in the same town and never even realize it. Or at least Ardyn doesn’t. The more Somnus learns about his brother, the more he realizes the gods are kind of full of shit. And when he does catch sight of him, he distracts Gil and they go a different direction so they don’t ‘catch’ him. (Gil legit does the same thing though, and knows that Somnus does it too, but he’s amused, so he keeps quiet.)
Eventually Ifrit, seeing that Somnus is now doubting Bahamut, sees his chance. Even though he’s getting sick from the scourge as well, he’s willing to step down as a god to save humanity, and has almost convinced Shiva as well. (He’s been secretly trying to make his fellow gods see Humanity’s worth and how they barely need to watch over them.) Ramuh is already on his side, because he delights in humanity more than he lets on. Leviathan is up in the air constantly changing her mind, but he can’t fault her, its her nature. Titan is behind Bahamut, and set in his way.
Anyways, he appears to Somnus and reveals the false prophecy that Bahamut intends to enact on humanity. Which causes him and Gil to freak out, and honestly try to find Ardyn to warn him away from going home. At the same time, the Draconian grows impatient, and honestly a little corrupted from the scourge that’s been binding to him for months now, and sets literal demons after Ardyn to drag him back to what will be Insomnia, and chain his magic to the scourge by force if he has to.
So eventually, it’d turn into a race against time, with Somnus and Gilgamesh trying to catch up to Ardyn, who is seeing more and more of the infected daily and feels obligated to help. And it turns into him actually being on the run from his brother, because it’s not just fun and games anymore, people are dying and will die if he doesn’t help them. Eventually, though an odd parallel, it would turn into Somnus trying to save his brother, like how Noctis tried to save Luna.
…But I’d want it to have a happier end I think. (Heck, might as well go completely self indulgent and have weird time shenanigans happen because of Somnus’s desperation and magic, and he accidentally yanks Noctis and co into the past to help.)
*edit: Also since one of my head canons is the Noctis looks exactly like Somnus, hilarity ensues once Ardyn sees them together. “Uh….are we triplets or was I adopted?!”
So I’m sitting here listening to music and thought of an idea for an Ardyn focused AU. Don’t get me wrong, I love him as a villain, but also, I want to see him just break the prophecy before it started.
Like, just imagine for a moment the reason the royal family has magic is because they’re related to the gods, but chose to walk a mortal life. But as time went on, the reason they had magic was lost. That long before Ardyn was born, the knowledge was lost to them. The gods remember though.
Then the scourge is introduced, and people in Ardyn’s time start getting sick. The gods could have eradicated it themselves, but at the cost of also becoming mortal and losing their magic. Why should they do that though? It would take time, but eventually, they could restore one of the blood line of Lucis to godhood and let them end the scourge by giving up their godhood and magic for good this time. The brothers would serve for this. One would be king, while the other would fall into the scourge.
So they put a plan into action. They appear to the Lucis Caelums and give them the crystal, something that will slowly start siphoning the magic from each successor of the line and storing it until the one they deem ‘the king of light’ is born. They tell them it is the soul of their world and that it must be guarded by the Lucis Caelums, that their magic is divine and was the best fit to over see it’s safety. Which of course they readily agree. The rite to tie the crystal to their line is planned for the next day, and each member will offer themselves up to the crystal to be judged on who will be it’s first protector.
But like, alright, through time shenanigans, imagine that young Ardyn goes to bed that night and dreams of thousands of years. He sees everything. The rise and fall of himself. His brother being tricked by the draconian into ‘killing’ him. Years of isolation in the prison on Angelgard. Getting free and walking into a world where the people have forgotten him. Learning early on that isolation was better than watching people he grew attached to die while he still lived. Hearing the plans the god had for his family. Growing hopelessly entrapped by the chains of the ‘prophecy’ and trying to change it. Being beaten into submission by the gods through the passage of years. The gods won’t let him die until he accepts that he’d to die on their terms. And when he accepts it, Noctis is born.
This part of the dream is the most vivid. Imagine him seeing Noctis, seeing that he has the face of brother, and his chest hurts. But he plays the roll of the villain and gets lost in the thought that soon, it’ll finally be over. He’ll die finally. He’ll have peace and…
Then he wakes, and he screams. He screams and cries, and REFUSES. With his heart beat in his ears, he runs to the crystal. He knows the truth. That it’s a shackle to the god’s will. His magic has always been HIS, and is not tied to the crystal. Not yet. He hasn’t received the order from the crystal, the gods really, to heal the people and allow the scourge to infect him down to his very soul. He knows what he is, and the crystal is at it’s weakest then. The only magic that has touched it has been from the gods that made it.
His brother and father run through the door the moment he places his hands on the surface of the crystal. And upon touching it, he’s in the Draconian’s realm, standing before a god. And he screams at him, accuses him, and firmly states that he refuses to let his family be used. The Daconian’s roars and an argument for the ages ensues. But the god doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
And before the Draconian can make a physical move, to stop him from foiling their plan, he’s back outside the crystal and forcing all his magic into it’s surface, splitting and cracking it apart with his fury. As it cracks, magic rips through the air. Flashes of the future, projected from Ardyn’s mind, echo around him and his family. And when it breaks apart, he collapses. It shatters, and when it does, it rips the magic from the gods, and kills the scourge before it can even really get a foot hold in the world.
General Physical Contact: Aranea initiates a lot of physical contact – I keep thinking of the video where she slaps Noct out of ‘danger’ status, and the bit in Episode Prompto at the campfire scene (healing him if he self-harms, kicking him over and then the ‘idiot sandwich’ thing to his face, etc.). She’s very casual in how she comports herself around allies, enemies, and her superiors. But I also feel that if someone initiated physical contact with her, that she would startle just a little bit – more mentally than physically (she keeps her composure outwardly, but inside she’s going ‘what the fuck what the fuck’) – and is usually surprised because she also gives off this air of being unapproachable in a way. She doesn’t let it fluster her really, but it’s something that she’s unused to and secretly, she welcomes it. I wouldn’t say she’s as touch-starved as I believe Ignis to be, but she definitely doesn’t receive enough general contact with others. Sex and sex-related contact is a horse of a different color though.
Driving Headcanon:Do. Not. Let. Aranea. Drive. Have you seen homegirl fighting? Flying around on a modified jet-powered lance? Bish is craaazy.
At least that’s what Biggs, Wedge, and her subordinates would say. But really, she’s a damn good driver. So good, she can easily do shit like drifting and doughnuts – girl’s a thrill seeker. She’s never ended up in a wreck and she can drive a car and fly an airship and pilot a mech just as good as anyone else. Probably even better than most. It’s just that her subordinates literally get motion sick/carsick/airship-sick whenever she’s at the wheel. So she saves the driving for when she’s by herself.
Thanks for the ask Apples dear!!
Gahahaha oh noooo! Poor Biggs and Wedge and any other passenger me included! But at least she’d be an awesome (drag) racer!
And that makes sense in terms of the physical contact headcanon! And aww I’d love to give her hugs! -just dont hurt me please-
Noctis:Son of Osiris, God of the afterlife, death, life, and resurrection.
– He tends to remain in the underworld with his father. Noctis has only shown interest in the human world once and has visited it because of his curiosity, but when he actually experienced it, he didn’t like it. Though people were really interesting, it was too loud and exhausting for him.
– This Prince of the Afterlife is the most introverted person you will ever meet. He’s extremely shy when he talks to wandering souls, or anyone for that matter. When he visited the mortal world he barely talked to anyone, when he had to talk to someone who questioned who he was it drained all his energy and he had to quickly return home.
– He strongly dislikes when people suck up to him or sugarcoat things, he prefers when people are blunt. Noctis himself is kind of blunt and he appreciates when people are truthfully blunt with him. But, at the same time it isn’t good to always bluntly tell Noctis something since he’s sensitive and will be upset if something hurts his feelings.
– Noctis gets worried that he’ll develop a crush on a human if he goes back to the mortal world, he finds them to be fascinating even if it’s hard for him to interact with people. What’s even worse is that Noctis gets even more worried that he’d get a crush on a soul. Noctis’ awkward self would have no idea what to do then.
– Most of his days are very lazy days. He tends to stay in his room most of the time, either sleeping or watching the equivalent of TV. His father dislikes it when Noctis is lazy. He thinks that his son should be focusing on taking over the underworld.
– His father, Osiris is merciful and tends to resurrect most souls, giving them a second chance. Noctis dislikes when his father offers for him to judge the souls who would either be resurrected or not. He hates having that much power, and truly doesn’t know how to correctly judge a person.
Prompto:Son of Hathor, Goddess of the sky, dance, love, beauty, joy, motherhood, foreign lands, mining, music and fertility.
– Prompto was so incredibly loved by all people he met, mortals and Gods alike. In fact, he was incredibly popular with both and didn’t mind one bit. He loved the attention he was getting, the attention mostly stemming from the fact that his mother, Hathor was beloved by all.
– His mother was important to the mortals, and even the dead. One of her jobs included welcoming the dead into the next life. During one trip to the underworld, Prompto met Noctis and the two immediately became friends. Both were in awe of each other because of how cool their parents are. “WOW YOU’RE OSIRIS’ SON?!”“Hathor is your mom?!? That’s so NEAT! She’s so amazing.”
– Prompto spent the majority of his time in the mortal world. He brought them joy, music, and even taught the humans how to dance. Though they didn’t dance well at first, the more Prompto came back, the better they got at it. Prompto was happy being with the humans, even at times wishing that he was human so that he could experience mortal life. He doesn’t know what a camera is since that hasn’t been invented yet, but he still loves preserving memories somehow so he has taken a strong liking to paintings.
– Prompto was happy. He was so happy all the time that it was impossible to wipe that big smile off his face. However, he did get sad. It was surprising, the humans never expected him to suddenly have this change of behavior. He had enjoyed spending time in the mortal world so much that he forgot the one thing that separated him. He was a God. Humans die. He had made so many human friends, but he had lost track of time, and they had passed away. It hurt him and he didn’t make an appearance in the mortal world for some time after that.
– It had taken Prompto some time until he understood that humans would die and he couldn’t do anything to change that. Bbbbbut, he kind of could. Because the spirits of his human friends would simply go to the underworld, he could just have his good pal Noctis resurrect them. Prompto really wanted to do that, he REALLY wanted to do that….but he knew that he shouldn’t interfere with death. It wasn’t his realm of specialty and he knew it wasn’t right.
– The only thing Prompto could do was move on and continue to bring the pleasure of happiness to those who were still alive. If his old mortal friends were given the opportunity to be resurrected, he would be filled with a joy that would motivate him for years to come.
Ignis: Son of Thoth, God of knowledge, the moon, measurement, wisdom, the alphabet, records, thought, intelligence, meditation, the mind, logic, reason, reading, hieroglyphics, magic, secrets, scribes, and writing.
– Ignis is very intelligent, maybe even more so than his father. Ignis has done extensive research on the human race. He has read all of the books, writings, etc. that they have published over the many years. Yes, he’s managed to read everything. Ignis even knows multiple languages.
– He has never been to the mortal realm yet, he wanted to educate himself about them before he went. As a God who has never met a human person, he didn’t exactly know how to interact with them. When he did go to see the mortals, he was surprised to see how much they respected him and were interested in him. He found himself intrigued by humans and stayed with them longer than he anticipated.
– At times, Ignis actually forgot that he was a God. Spending so much, perhaps too much time with them had made him forget. Ignis had an affinity for the scribes and he shared as much knowledge as he could with them. He taught the people about science, philosophy, religion and magic. At times when the people were having endless arguments, Ignis stepped in as mediator. Just like Thoth, Ignis was particularly good at balancing good and evil, making sure neither had victory over the other.
– If Ignis had the option to become mortal, he would never want to take it. It wasn’t because he disliked humans, it was because as a human he would die, and dying would prevent him from gaining more knowledge since life would continue to move on.
– When Ignis visits the underworld, he tends to assist Noctis with the judgement of souls. Ignis was taking over more tasks from Thoth and represented the judgement scales where the deceased person’s heart would be weighed against a feather which would determine their fate. Ignis enjoyed his time in the underworld just as much as he liked being with the mortals.
– One of Ignis’ dreams is to travel the world, gathering all the wisdom he possibly can, however it is an impossible dream since his duties lie with Egyptian mortals and Gods. Ignis has definitely attempted astral projection as an effort to explore the wonders of Earth while still remaining in the place his duties require him to be at.
Gladio: Son of Horus, God of the sky, kingship, war and hunting.
– Gladio’s bird tattoo represents his father Horus who flies across the sky as a falcon. Also inherited from his father are his eyes, his right containing the sun, and the left containing the moon. Mortals admire his eyes, the sun in his eye shining much brighter than the moon. When Gladio looks at his reflection in mirrors, his eyes don’t seem special to him and he can’t see the moon and sun in his eyes that the people speak of.
– Gladio has a great love for hunting, more so than his dad. He tends to go hunting for animals with the mortals since they seem to enjoy it as much as him. From every battle with animals, the hunting group always comes back victorious, probably because they have Gladio on their side.
– He also represents a symbol of power, and brings great protection to the mortals who worship him because of that. It seems that Gladio is much more powerful than his father, and has taken over his jobs for him mostly.
– When in the mortal realm, he dislikes seeing war break out between people. He doesn’t understand why they would do such a thing and destroy themselves usually over a stupid argument. He typically doesn’t know what to do and calls his friend Ignis to help mediate and stop the war. When Ignis does this, it makes Gladiolus feel somewhat weak since it should’ve been his responsibility to stop the fighting.
– Gladiolus tends to isolate himself in the most peaceful places, maybe tombs or near The Nile. Gladio reads there, Ignis providing him with new books to read whenever he finishes the others. It’s relaxing and shows the mortals that Gladio is a bit lazy, but not as tough as they originally thought once they see him curled up by the river with a nice book.
– This isn’t known, but Gladio helped build the pyramids. He’s super strong and buff of course he’ll help. In fact he did the majority of the work. But being the nice guy he is, he gives the humans all the credit. Once the pyramids are built, one of his new reading spots becomes the highest point of the pyramids. From there he can overlook the town to make sure everyone is safe while reading as usual.
A/N: I was debating whether or not to do this for the Greek or Egyptian Gods and realized that the Egyptian Gods don’t get enough love and truly aren’t as well known so here we are. BUT if people do want a Greek God post I’d be happy to do it! I’ll also do the Egyptian God for other FFXV characters if requested! Though he wasn’t included in these, my favorite Egyptian God is Anubis!! REQUESTS ARE OPEN.
